A. GRAMMAR:
I. Direct speech:
	Trong lời nói trực tiếp, chúng ta ghi lại chính xác những từ, ngữ của người nói. Lời nói trực tiếp được đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép.
Ex: He said, “I learn English”.
II. Indirect speech:
	Lời nói được thuật lại. Tùy theo người thuật mà có sự thay đổi về chủ ngữ, tân ngữ (sao cho phù hợp), và phải thay đổi về thì của động từ (lùi một thì), các trạng từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn (nếu có).
Ex: He said that he learned English.

a. Thì của các động từ trong lời nói gián tiếp thay đổi theo một nguyên tắc chung là lùi về quá khứ (các thì xuống cấp):

2. Cách chuyển sang gián tiếp ở các dạng câu:
a. Câu trần thuật:
Thường dùng động từ dẫn dắt “said”, “told”:
Ex: “I am learning English now.” he said.
 -> He said (that) he was learning English then.
 “I don’t want to go out with you.” he told me.
 -> He told me that he didn’t want to go out with me.
b. Câu yêu cầu, đề nghị:
Dùng cấu trúc: S+ asked/told S.O + (not) + to-V…
Ex: “Don’t talk in class.” the teacher said to us.
 -> The teacher told/ asked us not to talk in class.
Ex: “Can you open the door for me” Nam said to Ba.
 -> Nam asked Ba to open the door for him.
c. Câu chỉ lời khuyên: “ Should (not)/ had better(not)/ ought(not) to +Vinf…”
Dùng cấu trúc: S + advised + S.O + (not) + to-V…
Ex: He said to me, “You should go to class on time.”
 -> He advised me to go to class on time. 
d. Câu hỏi trong lời nói gián tiếp được chia làm loại:
+ Câu bắt đầu với các trợ động từ: Ta thêm If/ whether
Dùng cấu trúc: S+ asked S.O + if/ whether + S + V(lùi 1 thì) ...
Ex: Trực tiếp: "Does John understand music?" he asked.
Gián tiếp: He asked if/whether John understood music.
+ Các từ để hỏi trong câu gián tiếp:
Dùng cấu trúc: S+ asked S.O + wh-question + S + V(lùi 1 thì) ...
Ex: Trực tiếp: "What is your name?" he asked.
Gián tiếp: He asked me what my name was.
