 Quán từ (A, An, The) 
I. The aims and requests. 
1. The aims: - Help Ss to revise Prepositions 
 - Improve Ss’ language skill 
2. The requests: - By the end of lesson, Ss will be able to use all the target 
languages they have learnt correctly and do exercises about them. 
II. The Content: 
I/ The ( Quán từ xác định) 
1/ The đợc sử dụng với danh từ đợc nhắc lại lần thứ 2 : 
 - There's a man behind me. The man is old. ( Một ng ời đàn ông ở sau tôi. Ông ta 
già rồi) 
2/ The đợc sử dụng với vật, thứ mà cả ngời nghe và ngời nói đều biết : 
- There's a chair in the sitting-room. 
3/ The đợc sử dụng với từ xác định chứ không phải nói chung : 
- I love the people I'm working with. 
Tôi quí những ng ời mà tôi làm cùng. 
4/ The đợc sử dụng vật, thứ duy nhất : 
- the earth, the sun, the moon, the only one, the smallest house (so sánh nhất) 
5/ The + adj ( Chỉ một nhóm ngời) + Động từ số nhiều : 
- The rich ( ng ời giàu), the poor, the unemployed, the homeless ( ng ời vô gia c ), 
the old .... 
6/ The đợc sử dụng với sông biển, đại dơng : 
- The Red Sea, The River Thames, the Atlantic Ocean 
7/ The đợc sử dụng với nớc có đuôi số nhiều s : 
- The Philipines, The Netherlands, The United States. 
8/ The đợc sử dụng với từ chỉ quốc tịch : 
- The French ( ng ời Pháp), The English, the Vietnamese + Động từ số nhiều 
9/ The Browns ... : Gia đình nhà Brown ... 
10/ The thờng đi với : 
The ground (đất), the source (nguồn) , the root (cội rễ), the cinema, the theatre, the 
radio, the truth, the police, the same, play the piano, play the guitar ... 
- I can't play the guitar. ( Tôi không biết chơi ghi ta) 
- I don't have a guitar. (Tôi không có ghi ta) 12/ The first, the second, the last ...... 
13/ Cụm từ cố định không dùng the: 
 - at home, at work, go to bed, in bed, at school, go to hospital, go to school, watch 
TV, in nature 
14/ Những trờng hợp không dùng the : 
- Không dùng the với hồ : West Lake 
- Không dùng the với breakfast, lunch, dinner 
- Không dùng the với Room 5, page 12 .... 
- Không dùng the với địa danh gắn với tên ng ời : Le Van Tam Park, Camden 
Town 
II/ A, An 
- An đ ợc sử dụng tr ớc danh từ bắt đầu là nguyên âm (Sau khi đã phiên âm) 
 Eg: - a university , a one-eyed man, an onion 
- A đ ợc sử dụng tr ớc danh từ bắt đầu là phụ âm : a hat, a pen ..... 
- A, an đ ợc sử dụng tr ớc danh từ đếm đ ợc nhắc tới lần đầu : 
There's a chair in the sitting-room. The chair is nice. 
A không dùng với breakfast, lunch, dinner (nh ng ta nói : a good breakfast) 
Những cụm cố định không dùng với a, an : on holiday, by car, do business, on 
business, on purpose (có mục đích) 
 Exercise: Điền a, an , the vào chỗ trống nếu cần 
1/ I saw ....... accident this morning. ...... car crashed into .... tree. ...... driver of ..... 
car wasn't hurt but .... car was badly damaged. 
2/ It's ....... beautiful day. Let's sit in ....... garden. 
3/ We had ....... dinner in ..... most expensive restaurant in town. 
4/ Do you often listen to .... radio ? 
- No, In fact, I haven't got ....... radio. 
5/ I lay down on ... ground and look up at ..... sky. 
6/ Mary and I arrived at .... same time. 
7/ You'll find .... information you need at ...... top of ...... page. 
8/ I had ...... very nice breakfast this morning 
9/ Two people were injured in the accident and were taken to ...... hospital this 
morning.

III, Homework 
20/ My aunt lived on ...... ground floor of ..... old house on ....... River Thames. She
