I. Present Participle Form: V-ing

1. As a part of the continuous form of a verb.

I am working.

2. After “ GO” : go fishing, go shopping, go swimming,

I go shopping every day.

3. After Verbs of perceptions: hear, smell, see, find, catch

 + V bare Inf: a complete action: I saw the man cross the road.

 + Participle : an incomplete action : I saw the man crossing the road.

4. As an Adj.

 It was an interesting film.

5. Using in the pattern: Spend / waste + time / money + present participle

 He spent $400 buying that watch.

6. Reducing a sentence or part of a sentence.

• When 2 actions occur at the same time and are done by the same person of thing, we can use a present participle to describe one of them

He sang to himself. He walked down the road. -> Singing to himself, he walked down the road.

• When 1 action follows by very quickly after another done by the same person of thing, we can express the first action with a present participle

He put on his coat and left the house. -> Putting on his coat, he left the house.

• Present participle can be used instead of a phrase starting “ As, Since, Because” and it plains the cause or reasons for the action.

Because he felt tired, he went to bed early. -> Feeling tired, he went to bed early.

III. Relative clauses replaced by participles 
1. Hieän taïi phaân töø (present participial phrase) -> main verb: Active
Ex: The man who spoke to John is my brother.
 à The man speaking to John is my brother.
who/which/that + V(active meaning) à V-ing
2. Quaù khöù phaân töø (past participial phrase) -> main verb: Passive
Ex: The Sport Games which were held in India in 1951 were the first Asian Games.
 à The Sport Games which held in India in 1951 were the first Asian Games.
which/that + V(passive meaning) à V3/ed
Exercise 1: Rewrite the sentences with a present or a perfect Participles so that the meaning stays the same.
