Game: Word Association (See appendix)
- Divide the class into groups of four or five.
- Deliver handouts with the groups of four wods.
Each word in the groups of four words is connected with the same thing.
- Ask Ss to write down the missing word in each group.
 Example: Horn, graze, milk, hay –COW
- Ask Ss to find out the key word which is formed by the initial letters of all the words they have found.
- The group who finds out the word first wins
Expected answers:

The key word: ILLERATE
Lead – in: - What is “Illterate”?
When you don’t know how to read or write, you are illterate. Our lesson today will help you to know about illiteracy in Vietnam over the last few years.
Pre-teaching vocabulary:
1. Campaign (n) (situation): chiến dịch
+ Ask Ss to fill in the gap with a suitable word in the following sentence:
You all know General Võ Nguyên Giáp? He was the leader of Điện Biên Phủ........
2. eradicate (v) (synonym) – eradication(n)
+ What is the synonym of “to eliminate or to get rid of”?
3. ethnic mimority (n) (picture+situation): Dân tộc thiểu số
+point at the picture and say to Ss:
These peope live in the mountainous areas. They are the Tay, Nung etc. They are..........people.
4. expand (v) (synonym): to become larger
Checking: Rub out and Remember
- Rub out the words and leave the Vietnameses meaning, synonym or explanation on the board.
- Point at each explanation or synonym and have Ss speak out the English word.

Activity 1: Read and underline
- Ask Ss to read the text silently and underline the expressions given in task 1 on page 58.
- Ask Ss to find out the Vietnamese equivalent to the expressions and exchange the ideas with the one sitting next to them.

S: I think we should ask the school head-master to provide free textbooks for stucdents from low income family.
T: We should also collect used textbooks for school library.

- Tell them to discuss whether they are for or against with the solutions in task 1, p.59 and say the reason of their choice.
