Lead-in Shows the Ss a picture of two people kissing in the street and ask them some questions 1. Where are they? 2. Do you often see this scene in Vietnam? -gives feedback -sets a situation “ In America, a man and a woman may hold hands and kiss each other in public. But in Vietnam they don’t. This is one of the differences in culture between Vietnam and America. Today, we’ll get to talk about the differences among cultures of some countries in the world” -tells the aim of the lesson: Talking about the differences between Vietnamese and American cultures II. A Vietnamese greets the head of the family or an older person first, then the young ones. 5. Tet is most important. 6. The Vietnamese celebrate dead days. They prepare meal and often invite their relatives and friends to get together and talk about good respect of the dead person. 7. Young children often sleep with their parents. Teenagers go out on dates a lot. Asking someone about his / her age, marriage is considered to be impolite. People live in nuclear family People often kiss on the check when they meet to express friendliness Vietnamese Culture The Vietnamese are collectivists The Vietnamese never exchange cheek- kiss. It is a shock to most married women. It is OK to blow your nose in public. It is OK to ask people about their age, marriage People live in extended family Similarities Both Americans and Vietnamese are friendly, hospitable and hard-working people who always proud of their countries. Language: a) Vocabulary : bride, groom, banquet,,… b) Grammar : no structures 2. Skills: Listening- Speaking 3. Method: Communicative approach 4. Techniques/activities: True- False statements, discussions 5. Teaching aids needed: textbooks, board, chalk, tape 6. Procedures: Stabilization: (1m) Warm- up: + Greets the Ss b. Lead-in -shows pictures of wedding ceremony -makes some questions 1. What do you see in these pictures? ( Wedding rings, betel and areca, wedding cakes) 2. Where do you see them? (In a wedding ceremony) 5. Have you ever been to a wedding ceremony? 6. What do the bride and the groom usually do at the wedding ceremony? -gives feedback -tells the topic of the lesson: Wedding in Vietnam II. Before you listen -lets Ss repeat the words -introduces some new words + bride (n) (Picture) + groom (n): (picture) + altar (n): (picture) + banquet (n) (Explanation) + ancestor (n): ( Translation) + schedule (n) ( Translation) + blessing (n) ( Explanation) -sets the situation: “You are going to listen to two people talking about a wedding ceremony in Vietnam. Listen and do some tasks below” III. While you listen Task 1 -gives instructions “read through the sentences carefully to understand them. Listen and fill in the missing information” -explains some new words if any -plays the tape the first time -asks Ss to give their answers -plays the tape the second time to check their answers -gives feedback The key: 1. groom’s parents 2. red papers 3. altar 4. at the wedding banquet 5. wedding cards / money Task 2 -delivers handouts in which there are 6 answers put in the wrong order. There is one extra answer that they don’t need to use(The handout is at the end of the lesson plan) -asks Ss to read through the questions in task 2, identify the information they need to look for in each question. -asks Ss to listen to the tape and find out the correct answers to the questions -has Ss to listen to the tape and do the task -asks Ss to give their answers -plays the tape again -asks Ss to compare their answers with their partners -asks Ss to give their answers -gives feedback(T may play the tape to check their answers) The key: 1.
