 PERIOD 37: UNIT 5: FOOD AND DRINK
 LESSON 3: A CLOSER LOOK 2
I. AIMS
1. Knowledge 
Students will be able to:
 - Know how to use the measurement words and phrases such as some and a lot of / lots 
of with countable and uncountable nouns 
- Understand and use the How many/ How much to ask and answer about quantities
1.1. Vocabulary:
- Relate to the topic FOOD and DRINK.
1.2. Grammar:
- some/ a lot of/ lots of + both countable/ uncountable nouns 
- How many + plural countable noun
- How much + uncountable noun 
2. Competences 
- Develop communication skills
- Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work
- Actively join in class activities
3. Quality 
- Promote pride in the values of Vietnamese culture 
- Develop love for family

- Grade 7 textbook, Unit 5, A closer look 2
- Notebook, workbook.

- Projector, pictures and cards, sachmem.vn 
III. TEACHING PROCEDURES
1. Class organization/ Warm up:
- Using some real things: apples, oranges, tomatoes, water, milk, sugar, books, pens, salt, 
flour, pepper .
- Run through all of these words.
- Divide the class into 2 teams and ask each team to come to BB and pick up which 
things are countable and which things are uncountable.
- Check the answers and ask Ss to retell the definition of countable and the 
definition of uncountable, the difference between them.
2. New lesson
2.1. Vocabulary :
- countable(adj) /ˈkaʊntəbəl/: đếm được (Situation) - quantity(n) /ˈkwɒntəti/: số lượng (Situation)
- describe(v) /dɪˈskraɪb/: miêu tả (Translation)
- popular(adj) /ˈpɒpjələr/: nhiều người biết đến (Situation)
- cartoon(n) /kɑːˈtuːn/: hoạt hình (Picture)
2.2. Activities :
a. Activity 1: Grammar ( P53)
* Objective: To help sts understand and know how to use: some, a lot of/ lots of
* Content: Introduce the use of “some, a lot of/ lots of”
* Output: Ss can complete the task.
* Process:
- Present 2 sentences 
 I have some apples
 There is some water in the bottle
- Ask Ss to practice reading them
- Check the meaning of the 2 sentences and the use of “some”
+ Some: 1 chút, 1 ít, 1 vài => to talk about quantities.
 Some + both countable nouns and uncountable nouns 
- Present 2 other sentences 
 There are a lot of/ lots of students in the classroom
 She likes coffee with a lot of/ lots of sugar
- Ask Ss to practice reading them
- Check the meaning of the 2 sentences and the use of “a lot of/ lots of”
+ a lot of/ lots of: nhiều=> to talk about a large number or amount 
 A lot of / lots of + plural countable nouns or uncountable nouns 
b. Activity 2: Cirle the correct words or phrases to complete the following sentences 
( Part 1- P53)
* Objective: To help Ss practice using “some, a lot of / lots of” in sentences and in 
context.
* Content: Use “some, a lot of / lots of” by practice doing exercise. 
* Output: Ss can use “some, a lot of / lots of” well.
* Process:
- Present Ex 1 and check if sts understand the request or not
- Ask Ss to read the sentences carefully and choose the best answers on their own, then 
swap with their partners. 
- Ss do the exercise as instructed. 
- Ss share their answers and discuss the reasons why they have chosen them. 
- Nominate some Ss to read their answers in front of the whole class, check and correct 
their answers.

c. Activity 3: Look at the picture and complete each sentence. Write some, any or a 
lot of/ lots of in the blanks ( Part 2 - P53)
* Objective: 
- To give Ss further practice on using some and a lot of / lots of in sentences and help Ss 
revise the use of any - T help Ss revise the use of any
* Content: Do exercise
* Output: Ss can use “some, any, a lot of/ lots of” well by using pictures
* Process:
- Ask Ss to repeat the use of “ any”
- Run through the pictures
- Divide the class into 4 groups, asks them to look at the photos on the screen, write 
down the words/ phrases to complete the sentences as quickly as they can on their mini 
boards/ paper sheets and raise the board above their heads, saying "Bingo!" 
- The groups having more members who write correct answers the most quickly will get 
a star. 
- Observe them closely and has one student assist in writing the number of stars each 
group achieves.

d. Activity 4: Fill in each blank with How many or How much. Answer the 
questions, using the pictures. (Part 3 - P54)
* Objective: 
- To help Ss revise the use of How many and How much to ask about quantities.
* Content: Do exercise to definite how much/ many
* Output: Ss can use “how much/ how many” well 
* Process:
- Run through pictures
- Ask Ss to work in pairs to do this ex. 
- Call some pairs to read out their answers.
Key
1. How much – Two litres 2. How many – Two books 
3. How many – Two books 3. How many – Three bananas
5. How many – Five spring rolls 
e. Activity 5: Work in groups. Ask and answer, using the questions in 3. (Part 4 - 
P54)
* Objective: 
- To get Ss to use How much/ How many to ask questions about quantities 
* Content: Practice asking and answer using How much/ How many
* Output: Ss can use how much/ many well
* Process:
- Give Ss two minutes to think of and write down as many questions using How much 
and How many as they can.
- Pair them to take turns asking and answering the questions in Task 3 and the questions 
they have prepared.
Eg. A: How much water do you drink every day? B: Two litres.
- Ss work in pairs to practise. 
- Nominate some pairs of Ss to model this activity in front of the class. The others vote 
the pairs they like best. 
- Give feedback to help students improve their talk later 
f. Activity 6: Work in groups. Take turn to ask and answer about the recipes. (Part 
5- P54)
* Objective: 
- To get Ss to practice using measurement words and phrases, words of dishes and 
ingredients, How many and How much in context.
* Content: Talk about the recipes
* Output: Ss can use how many/ much to talk about their recipes
* Process:
- Choose some strong Ss in the class and assign the role of culinary teachers to them. 
The others will be culinary learners. 
- Ask them to sit in their groups to discuss and list all the questions and answers to make 
conversations in a culinary class. 
- Then mix them in groups of a teacher and 3 to 4 students and asks them to make 
conversations asking and answering how to make pancakes and an omelette in a culinary 
class. 
- Every S in the group needs motivation to take part in the conversations while teacher 
goes around and observes them talking. 
- Note all useful measurement expressions and some students' grammatical errors for 
later comments. 
3. Consolidation
- Ask Ss to repeat the use of “ some, a lot of/ lots of, how many, how much”
- Ask Ss to complete these sentences by choosing the best answer.
 - T checks the answers by playing “ noughts and crosses”
4. Homework
- Make questions and sentences about quantities, using some, a lot of / lots of, any, How 
much and How many.
- Do the exercises: part B (page 36,37) in the workbook.
- Prepare for Unit 5: Communication
